高加索山脈
高加索（格魯吉亞語：კავკასია；車臣語、俄語：Кавказ）是位於西亞及東歐交界處，黑海、裏海之間高加索山脈的地區，總面積約44萬平方公里。該地名根據古羅馬學者老普林尼著作《博物志》的追溯，是來自斯基泰語「kroy-khasis」，意為「冰雪閃耀」或「雪白」[1]。境內最高峰、海拔5,642米的厄尔布鲁士山被称为“欧洲之巅”。
由于被高加索山脉分割，该地区分为南高加索和北高加索两部分。南高加索又称外高加索，面积约18.5万平方公里，包括格鲁吉亚、亚美尼亚和阿塞拜疆三国。北高加索又稱內高加索，属于俄罗斯。达吉斯坦、车臣、印古什、北奥塞梯、卡巴尔达-巴尔卡尔等共和国都分布在这里。

历史
高加索地區是中亞古文明的發源地，曾孕育不少中亞古代文明。
在蘇聯解體後，由於當地民族結構複雜，致使分離主義甚囂塵上，因此發生了一連串的戰爭，情況跟1990年代巴爾幹半島上多國混戰的南斯拉夫內戰相似，使得高加索成為著名的「火藥庫」；其中在阿塞拜疆共和国境內的亞美尼亞人群居地納戈爾諾-卡拉巴赫共和国、俄羅斯境內的穆斯林群居地車臣共和国，和格鲁吉亚境內的俄裔群居地阿布哈茲共和国和南奥塞梯共和国。如1988年亞塞拜然和亞美尼亞發生的納戈爾諾-卡拉巴赫戰爭，以及2008年俄羅斯和格鲁吉亚發生的南奧塞梯戰爭。
人口
高加索地区位于欧亚大陆连接处。人口不足3000万，却有50多个民族。由于地势复杂，许多民族虽近在咫尺，语言却完全不通，因此高加索曾有“语言之山”之称。
